I am a well rounded person conversant in the arts, letters, and sciences. In the mid-1970s, I was attracted to flute playing since Radha-Krishna play flutes and they are one of the oldest instruments which can be learned by ear as their early players did. I taught myself how to play simple transverse folk flutes, which were inexpensive and easy to carry around. I enjoyed my bamboo flute and brass fife for several years.
In 1981, wanting to expand my playing repertoire, I purchased a classical flute and How to Love Your Flute by Mark Shepard to teach me how to play it. Twenty eight years later, my battered copy of How to Love Your Flute remains with me through many moves as a valuable reference.
Mark Shepard provided everything I needed to know to enjoy playing bamboo and classical flutes in both public and private settings, solo as well as with bands and jam groups. He provides technique, music theory, and handy reference charts. Especially suited for someone who wants to familiarize themselves with their instrument and be able to quickly start playing music. Highly recommended.
